About Mahjong Solitaire
Mahjong Solitaire is a tile-matching game where I clear the board by pairing open tiles while planning each move to avoid blocking future matches.
I know it as Mahjong Solitaire or Shanghai Solitaire, but the basic idea is always easy to understand. I look for two matching tiles that are available to select and remove them together. A tile usually needs an open side and cannot have another tile covering it from above.
How I play
The tiles in Mahjong Solitaire come in different groups, including Characters, Dots, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Seasons. A standard setup contains 144 tiles, although the exact collection depends on the version.
My main goal is to remove every possible pair and clear the layout. Each successful match exposes tiles underneath or beside it, giving me more choices for the next move. Some versions also give me tools like undo, redo, reshuffle, solvable layouts, different tile designs, or several board shapes.

Remove every possible pair and clear the layout
The visual scanning reminds me slightly of playing Geometry Dash Lite, where I also need to notice what is coming and react at the right moment. The difference is that here I have more time to think before committing to a move.
My strategies in Mahjong Solitaire
Look around
Before touching the first pair, I scan the whole layout. I try to notice which matches are available and which tiles are covering important areas.
I usually remove pairs that are restricting several other tiles. In a stacked layout, clearing something near the top can expose multiple tiles underneath, giving me much more freedom on the next few moves.
Check before using a triple
Sometimes I find three identical tiles that are all available. I do not automatically pick the first two.
Instead, I look at what each choice will uncover. If one tile sits somewhere harmless while another pair is keeping several tiles trapped, I choose the combination that opens more of the board.
Clear the upper layers
Stacked tiles are often my biggest problem because covered tiles cannot be selected. If several layers are sitting on top of one another, the tiles underneath may remain completely useless until I clear the upper ones.
FAQs
What is the goal of Mahjong Solitaire?
I need to remove matching pairs until no tiles remain on the board. The challenge is finding the right order rather than simply spotting matching pictures.
Can Flower and Season tiles match differently?
Yes, in many versions. Flowers can usually match other Flowers, and Seasons can match other Seasons, even when the individual designs differ.
Does every version use the same scoring in Mahjong Solitaire?
No. Scoring can depend on speed, removed pairs, consecutive matches, bonuses, or simply clearing the board, depending on the version.
